Dan is in love with his best friend. Well, ex-best friend, now. He and Mike grew up together, sharing everything from birthdays to family life – and showers. They went their separate ways after high school, Mike to a football scholarship and Dan to the Marine Corps, but kept in touch. Dan was ecstatic when his dream of being with Mike came true two years after high school – until Mike shattered his dream and his heart. Now, several years later, Mike has made an offer to Dan. But is it an offer Dan can accept? Will his heart end up broken – again?

Red Heart Bowl is a great novella, if not exactly what I was expecting. The tale begins in the present, then for about the first half of the story the lead character, Dan, is reflecting back on his relationship with Mike and their maturing years, from boys to high school, to the Marine Corps to teacher. Told by Dan, the reader has access only to Dan’s thoughts and emotions, completely unaware of where Mike may be coming from. Red Heart Bowl is full of turmoil. Dan is disappointed repeatedly, the ending is always uncertain. There is sex between Mike and Dan. There is also mention of sex between Dan and other men, though this isn’t depicted in as great a detail as that with Mike. Red Heart Bowl is very light on romance. Rather, it is more a journey of how two friends become more to one another, only to fail in securing a long term relationship – entirely due to Mike, as you will find out when you read the tale (you’ll surely want to hit him a time or two). And read the tale you must. Any fan of M/M is sure to love Red Heart Bowl, because whilst it cannot be labeled an erotic romance, per se, it has much to recommend it. Excellent characters, very well developed. A great storyline, both smooth flowing and engaging. And great sex! There are some romantic gestures, which are very tender and help make the story the enjoyable read that it is. My second Bobby Michaels has not been a disappointment. I look forward to the next!
